Hi, I'm Dr. Meghan McIlwain. I grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, where I was lucky to have a wide variety of pets, including cats, pigeons, snakes, and sugar gliders. My love for animals led me to earn a bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences from Queen’s University, followed by an internship at a wildlife center where I rehabilitated injured and orphaned animals. This experience, combined with my passion for animal care and medicine across species, inspired me to pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine. I graduated from University College Dublin in Ireland in June 2023 and started my career working at a Fear Free Certified small animal clinic in Ontario, Canada, before joining the team at Columbia Pike Animal Hospital and Emergency Center.
Why I Chose this Profession
Growing up surrounded by animals sparked my interest in veterinary care at an early age. My time at the wildlife rehabilitation center strengthened my resolve to work in animal medicine, giving me a firsthand view of the difference that compassionate, skilled care can make. I knew I wanted to be part of a profession where I could make a direct impact on the health and happiness of animals.
Favorite Part of My Job
My favorite areas of veterinary medicine include diagnostic imaging, animal behavior, and dentistry. I am particularly excited to be part of the internship program, where I’m developing my skills in soft tissue surgery and emergency medicine. Working in emergency care allows me to help animals and their families in critical moments, which is incredibly rewarding.
Personal Hobbies & Interests
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, baking, and snuggling with my deaf Great Dane rescue, Ghost. I love being outdoors — hiking is one of my favorite activities — and I’m always eager to travel to new places and experience different cultures.
